Be You for your Brand's Sake
It's been a BIG few months here at A Girl Inspired lab..I mean, home office and I'm now sitting at the dining table, with the Boy sitting on the other end eating nutella on toast - which seriously smells incredible - and I have a gazillion updates to share with you in hopes to inspire you to take action before the summer is over! PHEW! That was a mouthful!
There's the mission trip to Mexico that I want to share. That's a big one.
There's also a great group of gals on Insta who keep me motivated. Definitely want to introduce you to them. Here are a few for now.

Also, branding and what that means for you exactly because, for reals, I pretty much got my a-ha moment like 2 sleeps ago.

Since I can only choose one today, let's chat about what I learned about being a "me too brand" and how to overcome it.
Branding can mean something different for everyone and if you're branding yourself but confused about your brand, your customers will be confused too. Know how I know? I kept getting questions like, "what do you do exactly?" and "so, do you do that too?". Yah, that bit. It was like, I knew what I could do and what I wanted to do, and people were responding but not the way I had hoped. Then there's the question about all the people who didn't even stop to ask.
I had to take a step back and take a look at what I was doing and I found I was me too-ing. Like most people, I follow those who I look up to, who inspire me and I started doing what they were doing, even though we were different. Are different. Although we may offer the same or similar services, we are different.
To give you an example, most of the creative marketers I follow use a lot of blank space, so I started creating more images with blank space. That itself isn't a problem, except I'm not a blank space person. I'm also not a unicorn or mermaid or even eat donuts. I like color, contrast, shadows, imperfections, the beach, palm trees and real messy. The people I want to attract are those who think color, contrast, shadows, imperfections, the beach, palm trees and real messy is their jam. That's it.
Just as you're it and what you've got to offer is it. Do you because you are exactly what someone is looking for.
4 Ways to Blend Who You Are Into the Work You do & What You Want to Be Known For
- Be clear on what you want to be known for. I am the girl next door. I am a photographer. I am a brand enthusiast. What do you want to be known for? Bullet point them to get to the bottom line. Go ahead. Do that now, I'll wait.
- Create what you love and do just that. My husband, bless that guy, he loves options and he suggested that I do all the different kinds of photography. Newborn photos, school photos, family portraits, weddings...and the list goes on. I did. And I found myself in an unfulfilling job with no boss to blame but myself. Just because you could do it, it doesn't mean you should. Do what you love.
- Find and define your style. This is where the a-ha moments come in. Nike doesn't do things like Sketchers, do you see them sweating about it? Nike also doesn't conform to their audience, their audience finds them. You do not need to be exactly like the competition or even like your client. Figure out your style and stick to it. This will define your work and when someone sees it, they'll see you.
- Blend YOU into what you do. Your personal brand is one of the best ways to build your business. In the beginning, I recorded videos that showed my personality because truth be told, my photos and pricing were comparable to everyone else's but I hoped that by seeing who I am, humanizing me in videos, would set me apart. It worked. If that worked for me, it will work for you. Your brand is your outer layer that your future clients will evaluate before they hire you. And they will hire you.
